About 50 km inland is Fátima, a pilgrimage site visited by a few million pilgrims each year. Similar to Lourdes, the sick come to Fátima and hope for a miracle healing.

It is said, that on the 13th of May 1917, the Virgin Mary appeared to the three little shepherds Lucia dos Santos, Jacinta and Francisco Marto on a field. She told them to come back to this place on the 13th of every month. The following months more and more people joined them, until the 13th of October 1917, when 70000 people experienced the miracle of the sun. Without any problems they could look into the sun, as it was rotating like a ring of fire.

It is also said, that at the third appearing, Fátima told the three children three secrets. Two of the secrets were made public immediately. The third secret was sealed and given to the pope. In the year 2000 it was opened. It contained hints for the attack on the Popes live, on the 13th of May 1981 (anniversary of Fátimas appearance) in St. Peters Square.
Two of the children died when they where 10 and 11 years old. The third died in the Year 2005.
