A 45 minute drive from Guesthouse Salir you is Batalha.Batalha (Portuguese for battle) is a small town in the Leiria district and has about 8500 inhabitants. The town is probably best known for its “Mosteiro Santa Maria da Vitória” or Batalha Monastery, which became a UNESCO world heritage site in 1983.

The convent was built as a promise of King João the first, to thank the Virgin Mary for the Victory over the numerically superior Castilian army in the battle of Aljubarrota.

Starting in 1386, 15 architects built on it until 1517, spanning the reign of seven kings. Until today the convent remains unfinished.

The church and the founders chapel are free of admission. The convent and the unfinished chapel will have an entrance fee of six Euros. Sunday admission is free until 2pm.
