Caldas da Rainha
Caldas da Rainha is the nearest city, about 12km away and has a population of ca. 30000. You will find all the big supermarkets, like Continente, Pingo doce or Intermarche. In the citycenter there is a pedestrian area, with shops and cafes. The pedestrian area leads down to the daily market, where you can get fresh fruits and vegtables, mostly locally produced. A short distance from the market is the Hospital Termal Rainha D. Leonor and the public park.
The thermal hospital with its history of 5 centurys is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in the world. In 1484 Queen Leonor was travelling from Obidos to Batalha, as she passed a group of peasants bathing in foul smelling waters. She was told that the waters had curative powers. As she had some pain, she decided to try the water for herself. She was pleased to find relief from her pain, and ordered to build a thermal hospital. And so Caldas da Rainha (Portuguese for queens hot waters) grew around the site.
